LEARN ASTROLOGY - LESSON 10
"HOW TO JUDGE/INTERPRET A HOROSCOPE"
We judge the horoscope through an integrated analytical technique as per Systems' Approach. But before that let us bring out the methodology for a quick overall view of the horoscope.
As a golden principle to avoid disgrace to science and astrologers, no attempt for prediction should be made until and unless the horoscope has been cast properly with divisional charts, the planetary strengths have been identified and the operating planetary periods and sub-periods have been worked out.
The classics opine that the predictions made by astrologers well versed in calculating planetary longitudes and proficient in astrological lore cannot go wrong. We believe the predictions made after due consideration of the strength of planets, prevalent sub-periods, etc., with a peaceful mind have greater probability of coming true.
The predictions made by astrologers well versed in:
(i) identifying the right functional nature of the planets in a birth chart;
(ii) identifying the planetary strengths;
(iii) identifying the relationships developed through close planetary conjunctions/aspects;
(iv) identifying the planetary triple transit influences;
(v) predictive techniques brought out in other lessons on this website;
(vi) proper analysis of sub period results; and
(vii) appropriate astrological remedies advice have a better chance of succeeding.
First of all, the position of the lord of ascendant and the ascendant is to be seen as the whole activity revolves around the ascendant. The lord of the ascendant is applicable only to those ascendants which contain a mooltrikona sign of a planet, but in all cases we have to see the influences of the various planets on the first house either by placement or conjunction/aspect over its most effective point. All the results of the chart are to be felt by the native concerned and in cases where the ascendant is weak or longevity is less, the various effects of the chart may be of little use to the native. Next comes the strength of the Moon as only a sound mind can provide the native opportunities for rising in life. If the Moon is strong and has the help of a favorable Mercury and Jupiter, the native can make best use of opportunities available to him/her. The Moon is also the significator of mother and, if strong, it will bless the native with motherly comforts for proper development of life. Then comes the Sun and the ninth or fourth house, whichever first contains a mooltrikona sign, both factors related with father. The father supports the native in the early years of life until the child is competent to lead his/her own life. If the Sun, the ninth house and the fourth house are weak and afflicted, the father of the native has a short life or lacks the power to support the native. In fact, if all these factors i.e. the ascendant, the Moon, the Sun, the ninth house and the fourth house are strong in a nativity, the native can get opportunities for advancement in life; so to say he/she has the capacity and chance to learn and to make use of it. Where there is no mooltrikona sign in the ninth and fourth houses, as happens with the Libra ascendant, we examine about the father from the Sun and the influences on both of these houses.
The horoscopic influences are studied through the natal conjunctions, aspects and placements. The conjunctions and aspects help us in identifying the auspicious and inauspicious planetary configurations. The placement of a planet in a particular house links the significations of its mooltrikona house with the significations of its house of placement. A planet placed in a malefic house indicates suffering for the significations ruled by the said planet in the nativity.
For analyzing any particular aspect of life the following factors are to be considered:-
1. The prime determinant as well as additional prime determinant(s) of that aspect of life. The additional prime determinant is the mooltrikona sign lord of the concerned divisional chart ascendant. For example for analyzing professional matters the mooltrikona sign lord of the ascendant of the Dasamsa divisional chart becomes the additional prime determinant.
2. The significator of the particular aspect of life.
3. The house(s) signifying that particular aspect of life.
4. The planetary periods in operation.
5. The triple transit in operation.
The integrated analytical technique will focus on a stepwise approach:
Double check the correctness of the birth data. If any doubt subsists, rectification should be done before anything else.
After the horoscope has been cast properly, identify the functional nature of the planets from the ascendant, the most effective point, the most malefic planet and the most benefic planet. Underline the functional malefic planets.
Find out the strength of the planets/houses, check to see if any planet is weak for several reasons, identify natal auspicious and inauspicious close conjunctions/aspects and encircle planets/MEPs closely afflicted, identify natal placements and have a comprehension of the weak and strong areas of the chart.
Find out the current operating planetary periods (the main and sub-period) for the date in question. Identify the house where the mooltrikona sign of the sub-period lord is placed and the natal/ transit houses occupied by the sub-period lord. In this approach we will primarily consider the sub-period lord.
For the triple transits on the date in question, find out the natal and transit strengths of the sub-period lord and determine the planetary triple transit triggering (TTT) influence i.e. from Transit to Natal, Transit to Transit, and Natal to Transit (not forgetting the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu). Also identify forthcoming prolonged planetary TTT auspicious and inauspicious close influences.
Assess longevity: If a mooltrikona sign rises in the ascendant, pay special attention to the longevity by seeing the strength of the planets and the functional nature of the operating planets i.e. the main and sub-period lords. If most of the planets are weak and there are afflictions to the ascendant or to the ascendant lord with an operating period of functional malefic planets, then this situation may give a short life. Similarly positioned planets with an operating period of functional benefic planets give a middle span of life. Weak planets keep the significations to a lower level of fruition, if unafflicted. Severely afflicted planets cause tragedies or critical diseases. The operating periods either reduce or increase the impact. Pay special attention to the transit strength of operating planets.
For detailed study of the aspect of longevity, the readers may refer to How to Judge Longevity.
Using a combination of the sub periods and transits, the SA Astrologer can see current and future trends. Make your predictions for the different planetary periods.
Prescribe the astrological/jyotish remedies.
Note: For various aspects of life you may refer to “Order of Significations” list. This list will assist you to identify the primary and secondary significators.
A general assessment of the chart will indicate the significations of the houses/planets which will prominently surface in life depending upon the strength of the planets. The specific
trend results will be indicated at any particular time by the operating sub-period lord depending upon its functional nature, as well as its natal and transit strengths. For analyzing any particular significations, the strength of the house, the lord of the house and the significator of the house is considered. If the ascendant has a mooltrikona sign and its lord is weak, the other weak planets in the chart will indicate that the physical parts of the body ruled by such weak planets can suffer.
For the house-wise analysis of horoscopes please refer to Learn Astrology Fundamentals Section. For the purpose of illustrations, we will take up some specific aspects of life hereunder, which will give the readers a practical insight for analyzing a chart. The term, “the lord of the house” during the course of discussions on case studies refers always to the house where the mooltrikona sign of the said planet is placed, i.e. its mooltrikona house.
THE CONCEPT OF PRIME DETERMINANT
Under the Systems’ Approach, the concept of prime
determinants of any aspect of life is considered. The lord of that
house (or houses) which contains the mooltrikona sign(s) for any
particular aspect of life becomes the prime determinant(s). The
various aspects of life may be governed by more than one house.
For example the professional matters are ruled by the tenth and
second houses. So only that house (or houses) will be considered as the prime
determinant(s) of professional matters which contain(s) the
mooltrikona sign(s). In the case where both the tenth and second
houses do not contain a mooltrikona sign, then the lord of the
ascendant becomes the prime determinant of professional matters.
Similarly there are a number of houses which rule the marital matters.
These include the seventh, second, fourth, eighth and twelfth houses.
So, in addition to the planetary influences on the house, we consider
the lord of that house(s) as the prime determinant(s) which contains
the mooltrikona sign(s) in the house(s) for studying the aspect of
Predictive Methodology for House
The lord of the mooltrikona house, which rules a particular aspect of life, becomes the prime determinant planet for that aspect of life. If the concerned house does not contain a mooltrikona sign then the lord of such a house, which also rules the same aspect and contains a mooltrikona sign, becomes the prime determinant. If no house ruling the particular aspect of life contains a mooltrikona sign, then the significator planet for that aspect becomes the prime determinant.
Whenever there is a mooltrikona sign in the ascendant of the concerned divisional chart then its lord acts as an additional prime determinant.
When we take up analysis of any aspect of life we consider the following factors:-
1. Prime determinant of that aspect of life.
2. The house(s) pertaining to that aspect of life.
3. Significator planet of that aspect of life.
4. The additional prime determinant of that aspect of life, if any.
(This refers to the lord of the ascendant of the concerned divisional chart if it contains a mooltrikona sign.)
5. The operating sub period lord.
6. Triple Transit influences.
The analysis is done through identification of conjunctions, aspects, placements, transits and the operating sub-periods. The closer the conjunctions/aspects are, the higher is the priority for stating the results.
This simple technique leads us to the desired results. When you indicate the areas which are agitating the mind of the person seeking consultation, the person who is seeking the consultation confirms your finding, and seeks remedial measures to come out of the situation.
The case studies on this website are presented for practicing the technique of handling queries. The students have to understand the case studies and planetary configurations in them. They just have to understand the system and they will acquire confidence.
Suppose the most malefic planet is influencing a particular planet or a particular house or a planet other than the eighth lord is placed in the eighth house and its sub-period is running, you can straightaway say that there are obstructions in the significations of the particular planet/house without any hesitation. If the sub-period is not there, even then say in the matters signified by the above referred planet there are difficulties in life.
After narrating the results/indications of afflictions and bad placements, you can proceed with explaining the good placements and strong functional benefic planets. Then concentrate on the prolonged transits of the immediate past and/or the preceding sub-period and prolonged transit influences. This will give you a good start and your confidence level will start getting higher with each and every case study handled. The future is to be explained on the basis of the strength of the forthcoming sub-period lords and/or triple transit influences. Make astral remedies suggestions.
