USE "ASTROLOGICAL REMEDIAL MEASURES (JYOTISH REMEDIES)" FOR LIFE PROBLEMS
"How to Judge Divisional/Varga Chart - Ashthamsa"
Human life is one of the most precious gifts of God. This is the sum total of the actions (karma) of one's past life. One not only gets the results of his past actions but also enjoys a certain amount of free will for generating actions in this life. Human life can be enjoyed in full with opportunities for learning and fulfillment only if one is blessed with long span of life. The results of past karma can be found from the ninth house and the fifth house while karma in the present life is indicated by the strengths of the Sun, the Moon, Jupiter and the tenth house. Astrological texts lay down certain sutras for full life span to a native. The strength of the lords of the ascendant and eighth house containing mooltrikona sign and Saturn, the significator for longevity, the life giving planets, with operation of favorable periods collectively blesses the native with full life span. Subsequent paragraphs include some of the classical combinations for a full life span on basis of the location of Jupiter in angular houses. Saravali states that one born in Hamsa yoga will have longevity of 100 years. It further states that if the eighth house is not occupied, while the ascendant is free from malefic placements and Jupiter occupies an angle, the native lives for 108 years.

Saravarth Chintamani states that if Jupiter alone is located in an angle from the lord of lagna it gives a life of seventy years. The importance attached to Hamsa Yoga and attributing the long longevity to it perhaps seems to have been based on Jupiter as significator for discharge of duties. A person, therefore, who is blessed with full life span, can discharge his duties fully.

Hamsa Yoga is formed when Jupiter occupies a quadrant, which should be his own house or exaltation sign. The strength of this yoga depends as usual on the strength of the lagna and Jupiter and in which angular Jupiter is placed.

The rnahapurusha yogas are believed to confer name, fame, wealth, right conduct and long life to the native. Yet we come across cases where results are just otherwise. People do not live for the full life span in spite of the presence of longevity yogas. The reasons are normally effects of other planetary configuration in relation to the location of Jupiter in quadrants and other longevity yogas.

The readers would be in agreement with me that no single method mentioned in the classical texts for calculating longevity stands the test in the actual death cases. Therefore, taking the guidance from these principles, I apply the weak and highly afflicted operating planetary periods of the determinants of longevity as a tool for determining longevity. The determinants of longevity can be broadly categorized as (a) Prime factors; and (b) Supplementary factors. The Prime factors are:

(1) The lords of the ascendant and the eighth house if containing mooltrikona signs or any of these two containing a mooltrikona sign become prime determinant(s) of longevity;

(2) In case both the ascendant and the eighth house do not contain a mooltrikona sign, the lord of the twelfth house containing the mooltrikona sign becomes the prime determinant of longevity.

(3) In case the ascendant, the eighth and twelfth houses do not contain mooltrikona signs; Saturn becomes the prime determinant of longevity.

(4) The lord of the ascendant of ashthamsa (D-VIII) if containing a mooltrikona sign also becomes additional prime determinant of life.

The supplementary determinants of longevity are the Sun, the Moon and the ayushkaraka, Saturn.

In case all the factors that is the prime and supplementary determinants are strong and the functional benefic planets occupy angles/trines a native is blessed with full life span. In case the prime determinants and the ayushkaraka are strong, a native is blessed with medium life span in spite of the indifferent health due to other weak planetary combinations in the chart. In case the prime and supplementary determinants are weak a person can only be expected to have short life span. The extreme weak position of the Moon, weakness of the prime determinants and operation of sub-period of an extremely weak prime determinant result in death in infancy (balarishtha) or early childhood.

The functional malefic planets forming exact conjunction/aspect with the prime determinant(s), the most effective point of the first, eighth or twelfth houses become death-inflicting planets.

The lords of the first, eighth and twelfth houses, if suffering from multiple sources of weakness and afflicted, can cause death in their sub-periods. The close transit influence of the functional malefic planets during death inflicting planetary sub-periods in degree conjunction with the prime determinant(s) may result in the end of life.

After carefully examining the longevity determinants and assessing the life span a native is likely to enjoy, we may arrive at the planetary sub-periods with the help of transit chart which makes a person vulnerable to death. However, an overriding caution is that the assessed life span should be only kept in view by the astrologer for his own consideration. The longevity in the case of extreme illness can also be known by horary chart.

If we apply the above longevity determinants to the cases mentioned hereunder we may assess the longevity more accurately.

There is a mooltrikona sign in the ascendant, whose lord occupies eighth house in a state of old age, though in its own sign.  The ascendant lord is quite weak.  Besides its being in the eighth house, it is in its sign of debilitation in the navamsa. Mars and Jupiter are closely conjunct with Rahu. The significator of health (Mars) and Mercury are in the state of infancy and are closely afflicted by Rahu.  The life giving planets, the Sun and the Moon too, are weak. The Sun occupies sign of weak Mars and the Moon is under the close aspect of Ketu.

In ashthamsa (D-VIII), Mercury becomes the lord of the ascendant. Mercury is weak on account of its being in the state of infancy as also its being closely under the aspect of Rahu.  In ashthamsa, Mercury is posited in the eighth house and is being aspected by Rahu.  In ashthamsa, Jupiter is in its sign of debilitation.

On analysis we find that planets Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Venus are all weak and the planets, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Mercury are highly afflicted. Ketu is the indicator of misfortunes.  At the time of birth, Rahu was having its sub-period in its own main period.  Rahu's sub-period was followed by the sub-period of Jupiter, who is debilitated in ashthamsa.  In Jupiter's sub-period the native lost her father.  In the sub-period of Saturn, Mercury and Ketu the native continued to suffer from ill-health and finally died in the sub-period of Venus in the main period of Rahu at the age of 11 years.

Jupiter occupies the fourth house in its mooltrikona sign and is giving rise to Hamsa Yoga. HamsaYoga is one of the five Mahapurusha yogas and is said to confer name, fame and full life span.  The native died at the age of 51 years. The weakness of other planetary configurations did not allow operation of the results ascribed to the Hamsa Yoga in full. Mercury, whose mooltrikona sign Virgo, rises in the nativity is weak due to combustion and its being in the state of infancy. The Moon is in its sign of debilitation.  Ketu closely aspects the weak ascendant. Close aspect of Saturn, who is lord of the sixth house, to the ascendant is highly undesirable. The Sun is lord of the twelfth house and is placed there. The Sun is being closely aspected by Jupiter. This is the only one combination supporting longevity.

The ascendant lord of the ashthamsa occupies the eighth house with the significator for vitality.  In ashthamsa, Venus is in its sign of debilitation.

Due to the weakness of the ascendant, its lord, the Moon and the functional nature of the significator for longevity being malefic for the native, the native was only blessed a middle life span.  The native died during the main period of Venus and sub-period of Jupiter.

The lord of the ascendant is in the twelfth house in conjunction with the lord of the tenth house.  Thus both the self-health and the house ruling the profession become weak.  The Sun, the lord of the eighth house occupies its sign of debilitation.  Mars and Mercury are combust.  The lord of the twelfth i.e. depositor of the lord of the ascendant & tenth, is posited in the sixth house, hence weak.  Except the Moon, rest of the planets, are weak and afflicted in the main dart.

In the ashthamsa, the Sun becomes the lord of the ascendant and is associated with the debilitated Venus.  The Sun is weak in the nativity. Rahu-Ketu occupy the house of happiness of the D-chart. The native died at the age of six months in the sub-period of Saturn and main period of the Moon.  At the time of the death, Rahu was transiting the middle point of Ascendant and the Moon in degree conjunction.

Aquarius rises in the ascendant, whose lord Saturn, aspects it.   Saturn is weak as it is occupying the sign of a weak (combust) Jupiter. The Sun occupies debilitated navamsa. Rahu, which occupies debilitated navamsa, afflicts the Sun in the main chart by way of aspect. The lord of the development i.e. third house is posited in the sixth house in its sign of debilitation. Mars is closely aspecting the Moon in the ninth house. Mercury ruling the house of longevity occupies its sign of debilitation in navamsa.

In ashthamsa the mooltrikona sign of Mars rises. Mars is completely weak in the nativity due to debilitation and location in the sixth house of the main chart.  The native was having 24 days as balance of Rahu dasa which means main period of Rahu, sub-period of Mars and sub-sub-period of the Moon. As both Rahu and Mars are weak and the Moon, the sixth lord, having aspect of another planet like violent Mars from the sixth house, it was assessed that passing these 24 days was very difficult for the child. The parents were advised remedial measures but they failed to perform same as Jupiter the planet of divine grace is combust and weak in the nativity.

The native died on the 24th day of his life due to severe sickness developed on the 23rd day. The sub-period lord Mars, happened to be the lord of the ascendant of the ashthamsa.
